Minneapolis - 2009 Dec 14
In August I found out they'd be in Minneapolis at the Guthrie Theatre so I got tickets for my birthday--I'm a huge Béla Fleck and the Flecktones fan! We try to see the concerts whenever possible and have all the CDs and fun stuff.
It was be *best* concert I've seen in a number of years! The Flecktones had everyone on their feet -- numerous standing ovations and curtain calls.
The band has never sounded better either. Last night we found out Béla has been nominated for 3 Grammies (yeah man!) to boot!
Alash (Tuvan throat singers) were a great addition to such an accomplished band. We were amazed! It was cultural, spiritual, and musical -- a terrific performance by four young men of Central Asia. The way they fit with The Flectones didn't surprise me because of the earlier Outbound album featuring some throat singing. I was really drawn to the carefully crafted sounds. It reminded me of a night we spent at the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra when the lead violinst played a passionate piece. It had these strong, emotive passages offset by others of the smallest, slightest sounds and gestures. Alash brought that same level of skill in their performance.
See them if you can this winter--you'll have a great time!
I thought I'd post some pictures from last night. You might check on our Flickr site for additional pictures http://www.flickr.com/photos/rgosling
